Team Education 2.0 Week 4 - Research

by Nick Goodson

In this week's discussion we were asked to look at projects previously created in the program and to examine how they fulfill the levels of learning.  Two-thirds of our group chose to examine Alice.  Using Alice, we were tasked with creating our own "programs" that performed various functions.  Repetition and graphics, the look, were noted as being important.  Repetition allowed the learner to practice and lessons and increased recall.  Graphics helped things from getting too confusing as the colors used helped identify what different blocks of code did.  The same colors aided in recall as leaner's were able to associate certain colors with specific actions.  These features showed the important of visual learning.
Give the citations of the articles (at least three) you found from a peer-reviewed journal and a short summary of each.

The below article is a study looking at the benefits of using animation, visual cueing to support learning.

Questions:
Why  do you think visual learning is so effective in schools?

Are there any tech tools that promote visual learning that you find are highly effective in the classroom?

Visual learning is effective in schools. It gives prompt or immediate response to information. When an information is presented through visuals, it immediately catch the attention of students to look at it and are ready to react or respond. These are the reasons why teachers decorate their rooms with pictures relating to their subject areas or grade level activities. This give audience a general idea about the subject area and grade level.

I think most of the projects we created last semester are very good technology tools to promote visual learning. I even explained in my post how graphics promote effective teaching and learning as well as engage students in classroom activities.

    1. Nick, great succinct recap. I like the addition of audio and visual elements research that you brought into the discussion. Here are my thoughts on the two questions:

Why do you think visual learning is so effective in schools?
      - I think visual cues provide one more learning method in school. With the large role that TV plays in our life today as well as movies, I think we have trained our youth to automatically look for visual imagery in learning. Thus, it resounds when used in various instructional methods. All of our research seems to point in this direction as well.

      - I really like wordle for word clouds that help student visualize concepts. Mind mapping through programs like mindmeister or poplet are good too. The best tool that I have used in my English classes is the Glogster platform. It has all the elements of visual learning and is very easy to use. Plus, teachers get free access to the education license.

  2. Why do you think visual learning is so effective in schools?
I think visual learning is so effective in schools because when students can see what is being introduced and taught they can relate to the objectives faster. Visual learning engages the students, because they can see and not just hear a traditional lesson.

I find elmo and projector effctive because If I am teaching out of a book add their is a picture in the book, I can place it on the elmo and show the students immediately. I also like concept maps because you use visual along with words to teach.
